The Relationship between Rain and Cloud Water as Observed from the A-train

چکیده
Shallow maritime clouds are critical to regulating the climate of the Earth. Due to their warm cloud top temperatures and extensive horizontal coverage they have a larger net radiative effect at the top of the atmosphere than any other cloud type. In addition to playing a critical role in determining the radiative energy balance at the top of the atmosphere, they are also highly susceptible to environmental perturbations [1]. For example, it also proposed that their microphysics and thus albedo are highly susceptible to anthropogenic pollution [2] and observations show that their horizontal extent is largely controlled by the boundary layer inversion strength [3]. Furthermore, shallow clouds in subsidence regions also demonstrate the most uncertain response of any cloud type in their parameterization in climate models [4]. Because of the unique sensitivity and uncertainty associated with both microphysical and macrophysical processes associated with these clouds it is critical that a concerted effort be made ot enhance our current observational capabilities. In particular recent work [5] has suggested that the rainfall efficiency in these clouds is a key factor in modulating their extent and microphysics.

Remote Sensing of Cloud and Precipitation of Warm Clouds by Passive and Active Sensors aboard A-train Satellite
Though warm rain from low-level liquid clouds contributes significantly to the global precipitation and water cycle, it has been missed or underestimated by satellite remote sensing techniques. IR techniques miss all warm rain because they rely on cloud top temperature. Over land, passive microwave techniques miss all warm rain because they rely on ice scattering at high frequency channel. Over...

[1] Warm rain occurs in low‐level liquid water clouds and does not involve an ice‐phase process. Comprising many state‐of‐the‐art passive and active instruments, the NASA A‐Train series of satellites provide comprehensive simultaneous information about warm clouds and their precipitation processes. This study exploits multi‐sensor data from the A‐Train satellite constellation to investigate the...
متن کاملUnderstanding the Importance of Microphysics and Macrophysics for Warm Rain in Marine Low Clouds. Part II: Heuristic Models of Rain Formation
Two simple heuristic model formulations for warm rain formation are introduced and their behavior explored. The first, which is primarily aimed at representing warm rain formation in shallow convective clouds, is a continuous collection model that uses an assumed cloud droplet size distribution consistent with observations as the source of embryonic drizzle drops that are then allowed to fall t...
متن کاملCHANGE OF SPLASH EROSION RATE IN RAINFALL DIFFERENT DURATION AND INTENSITY ON MARL SOILS
Splash erosion is recognized as the first stage in the process of erosion that results in bombardment of the soil's surface with rain drops. Two basic processes in soil erosion are the dispersion of soil particles by rain drops and the changes caused to the soil's structure, which are then moved by runoff. In this research, the effect of various rainfall intensity (60, 90 and 120 mm/hr) on the ...
